Emulating The Prophet s.a.w.: Sense of Humility

Blessed brothers,

Let us elevate our taqwa towards Allah by obeying His commands and avoiding His prohibitions. May we be among those who strive to emulate the morals of Prophet Muhammad s.a.w. in our lives. Amin.

Brothers,

The Prophet Muhammad s.a.w. was a man of noble character and distinguished morals.  We should strive to reflect upon the stories of Prophet Muhammad s.a.w. and emulate his moral values. It is important that we strive to practise his teachings in our daily lives. Hence, the sermon today will talk about another one of his noble traits that we should instil in ourselves. It is the sense of humility shown by the Prophet s.a.w.

Allah s.w.t. says in surah asy-Syuara’,  verse 215:

Which means: And lower your wing (O Muhammad) to those who follow you of the believers.”

Prophet Muhammad s.a.w. was approachable to everyone around him regardless of their age or social status. In a hadith, Anas bin Malik - one of the helpers of Prophet s.a.w. – used to describe the Prophet’s conduct towards his helpers. He said that the Prophet s.a.w. never treated them harshly, nor did he question the ways they performed their duties. (Hadith narrated by Imam at-Tirmizi).

Let us reflect upon the beautiful morals portrayed by Prophet Muhammad s.a.w. Due to his humility and graciousness, his life was filled with compassion and love towards those around him. How about us? Do we not love the Prophet s.a.w.? Did he not leave behind his teachings for us to apply in our lives? Brothers, as we strive to practise the teachings of the Prophet s.a.w., let us also inculcate this noble trait in ourselves and our families.

My brothers,

As people of faith and knowledge, we must strive to protect ourselves from the negative traits of conceit and arrogance. He who has knowledge should not allow the sense of pride to deceive him into thinking that only his opinion is right, and others are wrong. He who has faith should also prevent himself from speaking in a condescending manner. The truth is, arrogance prevents us from being a righteous person. Often times it is our own ego that causes us to deviate from the truth.

For this very reason the Prophet s.a.w. said in a hadith: “No one who has the weight of a seed of arrogance in his heart will enter Paradise.” (Hadith narrated by Imam Muslim).

The sense of humility is the key to righteousness. It safeguards our relationship with Allah s.w.t., preserves ties among human beings, and teaches us that whatever we possess actually comes from Allah. This is because everything belongs to Allah s.w.t.. Humility opens our hearts and minds to accept criticism, feedback and opinions from those around us – our colleagues, friends, siblings or wives.

Take this as an opportunity for us to continue improving ourselves so that we become better than what we used to be.

May Allah s.w.t. make us among His servants who are always grateful for His favours and blessings, and who strive to be like Prophet Muhammad s.a.w. in every aspect of our lives. Amin Ya Rabbal ‘Alamin.

Second Sermon
