Being A Caring Muslim

My brothers,

Let us beautify ourselves by instilling taqwa towards Allah (s.w.t.), as it can guarantee us success in this world and the hereafter. May we remain steadfast in our journey to achieve taqwa. Amin.

My brothers,

Prophet Muhammad (s.a.w.) left two things for us, as a form of guidance in our lives. It is the Quran and his prophetic traditions. Thus, this month, the Friday sermons will discuss the lessons that we can learn from various hadith qudsi.

What is a hadith qudsi? Imam al-Jurjani explained that while the content of hadith qudsi comes from Allah (s.w.t.), the phrasing or wording was formulated by the Prophet (s.a.w.).

Among the unique qualities of hadith qudsi is that the words are usually gently phrased, and they touch the hearts of those who listen and read them.

As for today, let us ponder upon a hadith qudsi narrated by Imam Muslim, which means: O son of Adam, I fell ill, and you did not visit Me. He will say: O Lord, and how could I visit You when You are the Lord of the worlds? He will say: Did you not know that My servant so-and-so had fallen ill, and you did not visit him? Did you not know that had you visited him you would have found Me with him…?”

Such is the figurative language that Allah (s.w.t.) spoke through Prophet Muhammad (s.a.w.). It aims to soften our hearts to show concern towards those who are experiencing difficulties and hardship in their lives. We are therefore encouraged to spare no effort, in helping and offering solutions to those in need.

My brothers, this quality fosters compassion and kindness among humankind. When we show concern and strive to ease the burden of others, it creates a positive bond and strengthens the ties of a community. Allah s.w.t. says in the Quran:

Which means: “The believing men and believing women are allies of one another. They enjoin what is right and forbid what is wrong, and establish prayer, and give zakat, and obey Allah and His Messenger. Those whom Allah will have mercy upon them. Indeed, Allah is Exalted in Might and Wise.” (Surah at-Taubah, verse 71).

Brothers,

None of us will go through life without facing obstacles and trials. While some are being tested with sickness, others are facing difficulties in their career, business and wealth, and some are dealing with family problems and disputes. As we witness some of these situations, we might not be able to solve all their problems, but the least that we could do is to introduce them to the proper channel or organizations that may offer solutions to their problems. We should show concern for their plight.

My brothers,

These are the qualities that we must inculcate in ourselves. While showing concern for the plight of others, let us also not forget to care for our own parents. Be gracious to them, as how they have cared for us when we were young. Indeed, Allah (s.w.t.) is merciful towards His servants who care for others and fulfill the needs of their family members and relatives.

Let us continue to strive and pray that Allah (s.w.t.) protects us and grants peace and tranquility in our lives, both in this world and the hereafter. Amin Ya Rabbal ‘Alamin.

Second Sermon
