A Mazmumah Trait: Wastefulness
Blessed Friday congregants,
Let us have taqwa of Allah, by leaving all of His prohibitions and sincerely fulfilling all of His commands.
Let us also be grateful towards Allah for all of His blessings. A grateful person is someone who always appreciates and takes care of the blessings that have been bestowed upon him by Allah, the Most Generous, who does not neglect the needs of His creations. Allah tells us in Surah al-Mu’minun, verse 17:
Meaning: “And We have created above you seven layered heavens, and never have We been of [Our] creations unaware (of their needs).”
Such is the attention and the generosity of Allah towards us. The favors He has bestowed upon us are uncountable. Among them is water, which is a main source of our needs. Without water, not only do we lose our source of drinking, but also our food because plants and livestock would no longer be able to produce what humans need from them. If earth was to dry up, humans and all forms of life would suffer devastatingly. Even our religious rituals would be severely affected.
Therefore, dear brothers, today’s sermon invites us all to truly reflect on the value of water in our lives. We ought to use water wisely and with a sense of responsibility. Let us limit our usage of water according to what we really need as water is an integral source of our lives. Let us avoid wasting water, even in our religious rituals. For example, when doing ablution, we should not excessively use water as ablution can be done with a limited amount of water. What’s important is not the amount of water used, but rather our sincerity when performing our ablution.
We ought to bear in mind that if Allah wills, He can withhold His favors from us, including water. Brothers let us continue to live our lives with utmost gratitude to Him. Let us not be careless and arrogant with the blessings that He has bestowed upon us. Be worried, for someday our heedlessness may result in our loss of the blessing of water. When this happens, regretting may not be of any use. May Allah’s mercy continue to fill our lives in both this world and in the hereafter. Amin.
