Achieving Taqwa Through Sacrifice

 

Blessed Friday congregation,

Let us guard our iman and elevate our taqwa of Allah s.w.t. by obeying His commands and abstaining from His prohibitions. May Allah s.w.t. grant us steadfastness in our faith and taqwa. Amin.

Among the rituals that are related to Aidiladha, apart from Hajj, is the ritual of Korban. It serves as a reminder of the story of Prophet Ibrahim a.s. who was commanded by Allah s.w.t. to sacrifice his beloved son, Prophet Ismail a.s.

Imagine, my brothers, what Prophet Ibrahim a.s. must have felt when receiving this command. It certainly was not an easy task. However, their faith, sincerity and obedience in Allah s.w.t. had carried them through such test. Hence, Allah s.w.t. – through His mercy and compassion - replaced a sheep in Prophet Ismail’s place which Prophet Ibrahim a.s. then slaughtered.

Such was the spirit of sacrifice and unshakeable faith that Prophet Ibrahim and Ismail a.s. displayed. Prophet Ibrahim a.s. did not hesitate to carry out what he had been commanded to do; he managed to overcome his own emotions and desires to please Allah s.w.t. and gain His mercy. Allah tells us in Surah as-Saffat, verse 105: 

Which means: “You have fulfilled the vision." Indeed, We thus reward the doers of good”.

My Brothers,

Although we may not be able to perform Korban in Singapore this year, but we have adapted and made necessary arrangements to perform it abroad. The meat from this Korban will then be distributed to the needy in other countries and in our community – upon arrival in Singapore. As Muslims, this is how we adapt and uphold the spirit of sacrifice.

Sacrifice, in the sight of Allah s.w.t., is not how much we have spent of our wealth. Rather, it is measured by our sincerity and consciousness of Allah s.w.t. when performing these acts of worship. Allah s.w.t. says in Surah Al-Hajj, verse 37:

Which means: “Their meat will not reach Allah, nor will their blood, but what reaches Him is piety from you. Thus have We subjected them to you that you may glorify Allah for that [to] which He has guided you; and give good tidings to the doers of good.”

My brothers,

Amidst this COVID-19 pandemic, I am grateful that the Singaporean Muslim community has been able to strike a balance between practising our faith and upholding social responsibilities. We have made adjustments in our lives with open hearts and minds. We acknowledge that Islam teaches us to be responsible individuals who are not afraid to make sacrifices to protect ourselves, our families, and the welfare of the larger community.

We ask Allah s.w.t. to regard our sacrifice this Aidiladha as a true sacrifice and we seek His help in strengthening our faith and preserving our unity. Amin Ya Rabbal ‘Alamin.

أَقُوْلُ قَوْلِي هَذَا وَ أَسْتَغْفِرُ اللهَ العَظِيْمَ لِي وَ لَكُمْ، فَاسْتَغْفِرُوهُ إِنَّهُ هُوَ الغَفُوْرُ الرَّحِيْم

 

Second Khutbah

 

الْحَمْدُ للهِ حَمْدًا كَثِيرًا كَمَا أَمَرَ، وَأَشْهَدُ أَن لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللهُ وَحْدَهُ لَا شَرِيكَ لَهُ، وَأَشْهَدُ أَنَّ سَيِّدَنَا مُحَمَّدًا عَبْدُهُ وَرَسُولُهُ. اللَّهُمَّ صَلِّ وَسَلِّمْ عَلَى سَيِّدِنَا مُحَمَّدٍ وَعَلَى آلِهِ وَأَصْحَابِهِ أَجْمَعِينَ. أَمَّا بَعْدُ، فَيَا عِبَادَ الله، اِتَّقُوا اللهَ تَعَالَى فِيمَا أَمَرَ، وَانتَهُوا عَمَّا نَهَاكُم عَنْهُ وَزَجَرَ.

أَلَا صَلُّوا وَسَلِّمُوا عَلَى النَّبِيِّ الْمُصْطَفَى، فَقَدْ أَمَرَنَا اللهُ بِذَلِكَ حَيْثُ قَال فِي كِتَابِهِ الْعَزِيزِ: إِنَّ اللهَ وَمَلَائِكَتَهُ يُصَلُّونَ عَلَى النَّبِيِّ يَـا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوا صَلُّوا عَلَيْهِ وَسَلِّمُوا تَسْلِيمًا. اللَّهُمَّ صَلِّ وَسَلِّمْ وبَارِكْ عَلَى سَيِّدِنَا مُحَمَّدٍ وَعَلَى آلِ سَيِّدِنَا مُحَمَّدٍ.

وَارْضَ اللَّهُمَّ عَنِ الخُلَفَاءِ الرَّاشِدِينَ المَهْدِيِّينَ أَبِي بَكْرٍ وَعُمَرَ وَعُثْمَانَ وَعَلِيِّ، وَعَن بَقِيَّةِ الصَّحَابَةِ وَالقَرَابَةِ وَالتَّابِعِينَ، وَتَابِعِي التَّابِعِينَ، وَعَنَّا مَعَهُم وَفِيهِم بِرَحْمَتِكَ يَا أَرْحَمَ الرَّاحِمِينَ.

اللَّهُمَّ اغْفِرْ لِلْمُؤْمِنِينَ وَالمُؤْمِنَاتِ، وَالمُسْلِمِينَ وَالْمُسْلِمَاتِ، الْأَحْيَاءِ مِنهُم وَالْأَمْوَاتِ. اللَّهُمَّ ادْفَعْ عَنَّا الْبَلَاءَ وَالوَبَاءَ وَالزَّلَازِلَ وَالْمِحَنَ، مَا ظَهَرَ مِنْهَا وَمَا بَطَنَ، عَن بَلَدِنَا خَاصَّةً، وَسَائِرِ الْبُلْدَانِ عَامَّةً، يَارَبَّ الْعَالَمِينَ. رَبَّنَا آتِنَا فِي الدُّنيَا حَسَنَةً، وَفِي الْآخِرَةِ حَسَنَةً، وَقِنَا عَذَابَ النَّارِ.

عِبَادَ اللهِ، إِنَّ اللهَ يَأْمُرُ بِالْعَدْلِ وَالْإِحْسَانِ، وَإِيتَاءِ ذِي الْقُرْبَى وَيَنْهَى عَنِ الْفَحْشَاءِ وَالْمُنكَرِ وَالْبَغْيِ، يَعِظُكُمْ لَعَلَّكُمْ تَذَكَّرُونَ، فَاذْكُرُوا اللهَ الْعَظِيمَ يَذْكُرْكُمْ، وَاشْكُرُوهُ عَلَى نِعَمِهِ يَزِدْكُمْ، وَاسْأَلُوهُ مِنْ فَضْلِهِ يُعْطِكُمْ، وَلِذِكْرُ اللهِ أَكْبَرُ، وَاللهُ يَعْلَمُ مَا تَصْنَعُونَ.
