Uswatun Hasanah – Mercy

My brothers and sisters in Islam,

Let us together elevate our taqwa towards Allah (s.w.t.) by carrying out His obligations and abstaining from His prohibitions. May Allah (s.w.t.) continue to grant us His guidance. Amin.

Brothers and sisters,

Love for our Prophet (s.a.w.) is an important part of our faith. It should not only be shown through our words, but it should also be reflected through our actions and by emulating his noble examples. As Allah (s.w.t.) says in surah Ali-Imran verse 31:

Which means: “Say (O Prophet Muhammad); ‘If you love Allah, then follow me, so that Allah will love you, and will forgive you your sins. And Allah is Forgiving and Merciful.’”

This is the objective of the sermons this month which is to highlight the characteristics of our Prophet (s.a.w.) for us to emulate.

Hence, allow me to share another characteristic of our Prophet (s.a.w.), that I believe is important for us to follow.

Brothers and sisters,

Should we look through the history of our Prophet (s.a.w.) and examine each decision made by our Prophet (s.a.w.) whilst managing the community, we will find that our Prophet (s.a.w.) would always choose the approach that would aid in fostering unity and harmony. Whenever there was an opportunity to make peace, achieve consensus, and promote cooperation, that will be his (s.a.w.) chosen approach, even if there were those who did not agree with him.

For example, let us look at the treaty of Hudaybiyah. Although some of the terms that our Prophet Muhammad (s.a.w.) agreed to appeared to be in favour of the Quraysh, he viewed the situation holistically, and considered the long-term benefits that the treaty would provide, thereby choosing the terms that would ensure peace and harmony.

This incident, as well as many other incidents from the history of our Prophet (s.a.w.), show us that he was consistently focused on seeking a harmonious and prosperous life for all. The approach favoured by our Prophet (s.a.w.) was one filled with wisdom, and allowed for gradual improvements to their lives.

Brothers and sisters,

This serves as a lesson for us whilst managing our lives. In carrying out our religious obligations, we have to take into consideration our personal situations, as well as our differing circumstances. This is reflective of a religion that grants ease to its followers, and is accommodating of their needs.

As mentioned in a hadith that was narrated by Ibn ‘Abbas, which says: “Rasulullah was asked, ‘Which religion is most beloved to Allah?’” Our Prophet (s.a.w.) replied:

Which means: “The one that is easy and straightforward, as well as accommodating.” (Hadith narrated by al-Bukhari).

According to Imam Ibn ‘Ashur, the meaning of “al-ḥanīfiyyah al-samḥah” refers to the easy and accommodating nature of the religion, as well as tolerance in its practices, such that the religion and all its teachings can be readily accepted, and practised conscientiously.

Alhamdulillah, our practise of the religion here in Singapore has been grounded upon the principle of moderation. This principle encourages us to do our best in whatever field we are in. An attitude that enables us to make informed decisions on which needs to be prioritised. An attitude that pushes us to display compassion to all. An attitude of placing society over one’s self. The Muslim community in Singapore is unique. We live in a plural society but we are able to practise our religion comfortably. We should continue to preserve and guard this uniqueness.

Let us pray that Allah (s.w.t.) make us amongst those who always show mercy and love towards others, and make it easy for us to emulate the noble examples that our Prophet (s.a.w.) has shown us. Amin Ya Rabbal ‘Alamin.

Second Sermon
