A Believer’s Reliance on Allah s.w.t.

Blessed Friday congregation,

Let us increase our taqwa in Allah s.w.t. Let us obey His commands and abstain from His prohibitions. May we remain steadfast in seeking goodness from Allah s.w.t.

All of us surely desire a life of ease and comfort. We hope that our lives today are better than yesterday and that our households are filled with happiness and love. We ask all these blessings from none other than Allah s.w.t., the Best Planner of all our affairs.

Imam al-Ghazali mentioned in one of his writings that when we hope for something, it is a manifestation of our reliance on Allah s.w.t. and an effort we make in its pursuit. As such, the true essence of hope is built upon faith in Allah s.w.t. and backed by hard work and optimism – regardless of the circumstances.

When we place our faith in Allah s.w.t., we are acknowledging the fact that He listens to us and knows our needs and thus strive to bring ourselves closer to Him – asking Him to accept our efforts and grant us His love and mercy. Allah s.w.t. mentioned in the Quran in Surah Fatir, verse 29:

Meaning: “Indeed, those who recite the Book of Allah and establish prayer and spend [in His cause] out of what We have provided them, secretly and publicly, expect a profit that will never perish.”

This verse illustrates to us that those who place their reliance on Allah s.w.t. are those who put in their due efforts and do not lose hope in what He has ordained. Let us ponder upon a hadith qudsi in which the Prophet s.a.w. says:

"Allah s.w.t. says: O son of Adam, so long as you call upon Me and place your hope in Me, I shall forgive you for what you have done, and I shall not mind”.  (Hadith narrated by Imam at-Tirmizi).

My brothers,

Our current situation has made us realise the importance of placing our faith in Allah s.w.t. and seeking His help. In addition, we must strive to increase our good deeds, as well as support those who are in need.

I have mentioned three important qualities: 1. Placing our trust in Allah s.w.t., 2. Increasing our good deeds, and 3. Making a positive impact in the lives of others). These qualities are the hallmarks of a faithful servant of Allah s.w.t. who possesses the resilience in overcoming life challenges.

Brothers, we must accept that life is ever-changing. Sometimes change means that we must adapt to our conditions and adopt those changes in order to move forward. Those who believe in Allah s.w.t. and rely upon Him would certainly accommodate these changes without losing sight of their roles and responsibilities.

We ask Allah s.w.t. to grant us everlasting goodness and bestow His mercy upon us. May He accept our deeds, listen to our pleas and grant us our wishes. Amin Ya Rabbal ‘Alamin.
