Ustaz Irwan Hadi Mohd Shuhaimy
Ustaz Irwan is the eloquent Deputy Director of Office of the Mufti and Religious Policy and Regulation in Muis. It’s hard not to love reading and listening to his enlightened opinions on the contemporary issues facing the Singapore Muslim community. For example, in 2017, Ustaz Irwan categorically declared that spousal abuse, of any form, is not allowed in Islam, in response to an opinion that went viral online. His detailed and well-reasoned explanation earned much applause from Singaporean netizens. Ustaz Irwan completed his degree in Islamic law Al-Azhar University in Cairo, where he was on the Dean’s list in the final year. During his studies, he managed to gain ijazahs in traditional Islamic sciences from scholars such as the former Grand Mufti of Egypt, Sheikh Dr Ali Jum'ah and Sheikh Ahmad Taha Rayyan. Ustaz Irwan was awarded the prestigious Chevening Scholarship from the Foreign and Commonwealth Office, UK to pursue his Masters of Law at the School of Oriental and African, University of London, where he obtained an overall distinction. He is currently pursuing his Juris Doctor degree at the Singapore University of Social Sciences.
